America’s Madison Keys defeated world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Western and Southern Open. Two-time Grand Slam champion Sviatake has been unable to progress past the last 16 from four tournaments after winning the French Open in June. 24-ranked Madison defeated top-ranked Sviatake for the first time in six clashes. Earlier, Madison had not won a set against Inga.
After losing the first set, Sviatec lost the first five games in the second set. Coming to match point, Sviatec won four games in a row. However, Madison then went on to win another game to enter the last eight. Sviatec had earlier won their two matches against Madison with scores of 6-1, 6-0.
After winning the match, Madison said, “Last time Sviatec beat me badly. I am very happy to win this time. Madison will next take on Wimbledon champion Elena Ribakina. Ribakina defeated Alison Siske Amritraj 6-2, 6-4.
Meanwhile, defending US Open champion Emma Radukanu was defeated by seventh seed Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-4. Emma defeated Serena Williams in the first match. Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova defeated this year’s Wimbledon runner-up and fifth seed Ons Jebuar 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 to reach the last eight.
Men’s number one Daniil Medvedev advanced to the last eight after defeating Denis Shapovalov 7-5, 7-5. In the next match, Medvedev will take on 11th seed Taylor Fritz. Taylor defeated sixth seed Andrey Rublev 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-5.
