0 AIFF: Bhaichung Bhutia and BJP MP Kalyan Choubey jumped in the fray, filed nomination for the post of president

Veteran Bhaichung Bhutia and his one-time teammate, former goalkeeper, BJP MP Kalyan Choubey have filed their nominations for the post of president, despite the fate of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) elections not being decided after the suspension of FIFA.

Apart from the country, Kalyan Choubey, who plays for clubs like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, is being said to be the frontrunner in the race for president. Bhutia has filed nomination as the representative of the footballers. FIFA has objected to giving voting rights to 50% of footballers.

Lyngdoh, Shaji, Mamta’s brother also filed nomination:

Bhutia’s name has been proposed by his former India teammate Deepak Mandal, while Madhu Kumari has endorsed his name. Bhutia says that he has filed his nomination as a leading player as per the directions of the Supreme Court. He hopes that the players will get a chance to serve Indian football. He wants to show that he can do well not only on the field but also as an administrator.

Besides Bhutia, Delhi Soccer Association president Shaji Prabhakaran, former footballer and Meghalaya Legislative Assembly MLA Eugenson Lyngdoh, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s brother Ajit Banerjee have also filed nominations for the post of president. Friday was the last day for filing nominations while elections are proposed on August 28.

Gujarat, Arunachal come out in support for welfare:

Choubey is definitely a footballer and MP, but he has filed nomination like a common member. The special thing is that his name has been prefaced by Home Minister Amit Shah’s state Gujarat and Law Minister Kiren Rijiju’s state Arunachal Pradesh. Bhutia played for the country from 1995 to 2011. He also represented JCT, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, while from 1999 to 2002 he also played for English football club Bari.

The situation on elections may be clear on Monday:

Even after the suspension of FIFA, the CoA has continued the election process as per the order of the Supreme Court on August 3. However, the hearing of the case in the Supreme Court is scheduled for Monday. It is expected that keeping in mind the objections of FIFA, not only will the 50 percent voting rights given to prominent footballers be withdrawn, but the entire electoral process can be restarted. Hours before the suspension of the AIFF, the CoA had agreed to hold the elections without giving voting rights to prominent footballers at the protest of FIFA.

Ministry urged to allow Indian clubs to play in AFC tournaments:

The Sports Ministry has urged FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to allow Indian clubs Sri Gokulam Kerala and ATK Mohun Bagan to play in AFC tournaments. Gokulam’s team, which went to play the AFC Women’s Club Championship, is currently stuck in Uzbekistan. The Ministry has instructed the Indian Embassy in Tashkent to take care of the team, as well as maintain constant communication with the players of the team and the President of the club.

Gokulam was barred from playing in the AFC Women’s Club Championship after arriving in Tashkent following a FIFA ban on the AIFF. Gokulam’s first match is against Iran in Karshi on 23 August, while on 26 August it will play against the host country’s club. Following the efforts of the ministry, the club was given a 48-hour stay in Tashkent by the AFC. Mohun Bagan is scheduled to play the semi-finals of the AFC Cup Inter Zone in Bahrain on September 7.
