0 Kargil Vijay Diwas: From the appearance of infiltrators to India’s victory, read the full story of those 84 days of 1999

It has been 23 years since the Kargil War. India got victory in this war on this day. The area where this war was fought. There the temperature drops to -50 in winter. These areas were vacated during the winter season. Taking advantage of this, infiltration was done from Pakistan side. The Pakistan Army also helped in this infiltration.

  • May 3, 1999 is the date when India came to know about this infiltration. Actually some local shepherds told the people of Indian army about it. The tension and struggle that started after this lasted for 84 days. India won 84 days later on 26 July 1999. Let us understand the full story of these 84 days through dates.
  • May 5, 1999, after receiving information about the sighting of infiltrators, the Indian Army sent a patrol party to the infiltrated area. When the patrolling party reached the infiltration area, the infiltrators killed all the five jawans. The dead bodies of the martyred soldiers were also vandalised. The intruders wanted to capture the Leh-Srinagar highway. Through this he wanted to cut off Leh from the rest of India.On May 9, a Pakistani army cannonball fell in Kargil district and blew up India’s ammunition depot.
  • On 10 May 1999, Pakistani infiltrators were spotted in Drass, Kaksar, Batalik Sectors. At that time it was estimated that about 600 to 800 infiltrators had captured Indian posts.
  • After 15 May 1999, the sending of the army from different areas of Kashmir started.
  • On 26 May, the Indian Air Force bombarded the intruders fiercely.
  • On 27 May, two Indian fighter jets were shot down by the Pakistani army. Flight Lieutenant K Nachiketa was taken prisoner of war by Pakistan. At the same time, Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja was martyred.
  • Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s statement came on 31 May 1999. He said that a war-like situation has been created in Kashmir.
  • On 3 June 1999, Pakistan handed over Flight Lieutenant K Nachiketa to India under Indian pressure.
  • On June 5, 1999, India showed the world the evidence of the involvement of Pakistan Army in the form of infiltrators. India showed the world the identity cards of three Pakistani soldiers.
  • On 6 June, India intensified its attack on Pakistani infiltrators. India launched a major operation against infiltrators in the Dras-Kargil sector.
  • On 9 June, the Indian Army recaptured two very important peaks in the Baltic sector.
  • On June 11, India made public the evidence of Pakistan Army Chief Pervez Musharraf’s involvement in the infiltration plan. Earlier, the Pakistan government and army were denying their hand in the infiltration. India exposed Pakistan’s conspiracy by intercepting a conversation.
  • On 13 June, the Indian Army recaptured the Tololing peak in the Dras sector. This was one of the most difficult operations of this war. After India’s disclosure, international pressure on Pakistan started increasing.
  • On June 29, India recaptured two important peaks near the Tiger Hills.
  • On July 4, the Indian Army hoisted the tricolor on Tiger Hills. After a continuous battle that lasted for about 11 hours, the Indian Army captured this important post.
  • On July 5, the Indian Army captured the Drass sector. This sector was strategically very important.
  • On 7 July, the Indian Army recaptured the Jubar hill in the Batalik sector. Captain Vikram Batra was martyred during another operation on 7th July itself.
  • On July 11, the Indian Army recaptured the peaks of almost all the hills in the Batalik sector.
  • On 12 July, Pakistan’s losing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif offered India talks.
  • On 14 July, the Indian Army completely expelled the Pakistani army from Indian territory. India regained all its territories.
  • On 26 July, India declared its victory in the Kargil War.
