0 Kargil War: The son of Mother India who crushed Pakistan, read the heroic saga of ‘Sher Shah’

It has been 23 years since the Kargil War. The tales of bravery of India’s bravehearts are still fresh in our minds. In this war, Major Vikram Batra, the brave son of Mother India, had shown unparalleled bravery and tactical skills. His friends and enemies called him ‘Sher Shah’. Batra not only captured many strategically important peaks but also crushed the morale of the Pak army.

Under the leadership of Batra, the Indian Army snatched Point-5140 from the Pakistani infiltrators. The fierceness of the battle during the Kargil war can be gauged from the fact that the Pakistani army was hiding in the bunkers built on top of the mountains while the Indian army was attacking from the open space below. For this reason, India had to face strong resistance from the Pakistan Army.

Vikram Batra, a graduate in science, joined the army through CDS. In July 1996, he got admission in the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and on 6 December 1997 he was appointed as a lieutenant in the 13th Army. After which he also took commando training.

Date June 1, 1999:

Vikram Batra’s commando contingent was sent to the Kargil war. After winning Hump and Raki Nab, he was promoted to Captain. After this, Captain Batra’s contingent got the responsibility of freeing the strategically most important peak number-5140 from the Pak army, just above the Srinagar-Leh road.

Vikram Batra, along with his comrades, unfurled the tricolor on this peak on June 20, 1999 at 3.30 am, despite the extremely difficult terrain and unfavorable conditions. After this, Vikram Batra called his command through the radio from this peak with the victory slogan ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’. The picture of Vikram Batra and his team with the Indian flag in peak 5140 was seen by the whole world, which became the hallmark of the Kargil war. This announcement of his is not only in the army but also in the hearts of the people all over India. During this time Vikram Batra got the name of ‘Sher Shah’ as well as ‘Lion of Kargil’.

After this, the army entrusted the responsibility of capturing the peak 4875 to Vikram Batra and his team. Not caring for his life, Captain Batra along with Lieutenant Anuj Nayyar and his companions started to conquer this peak. This peak was at an altitude of 17 thousand feet above sea level and fell on an ascent of 80 degrees.

On 7 July 1999, Captain Vikram Batra was martyred while rescuing a wounded officer. In view of his indomitable valor and valor, the Government of India posthumously awarded him the highest military honor Param Vir Chakra in August 1999.
