0 Kargil War: Story of MiG 21 Fighter Jet in Kargil War

Along with the Army, the Air Force had also made an unprecedented contribution in defeating Pakistan in the Kargil War. An Air Force fighter plane inflicted such a deep injury on Pakistan that Pakistan used to call it ‘witch’. Now you can guess from this that how much Pakistan must have been frightened by this ‘brave’ of the Indian Air Force during the war.

The Pakistani soldiers sitting in an ambush on the high peaks of Kargil did not expect that they could be attacked from the sky. MiG 27 fighter jets of the Indian Air Force started raining fire on Pakistani soldiers from the sky. This brave Air Force bomber so accurate and lethal on the supply and post of the Pak Army that his feet were uprooted.

This Russian fighter aircraft capable of hitting 1700 km per hour and capable of attacking air to ground was given the name Bahadur for showing valor in the Kargil war. The fear of this engulfed the mind of Pakistan so much that it gave the name ‘witch’.

When this plane was flying close to the surface of the ground, then any radar could hardly detect it. Its sound instilled fear in the hearts of enemies. However, during its 38-year journey in the Indian Air Force, this fighter aircraft has seen many ups and downs.

Was adept at hitting the ground accurately from the air:

MiG-27 was the best fighter aircraft of its time. It was so adept at hitting the ground from the air that it could destroy the enemy before it could be detected. This fighter jet was capable of flying 1700 kilometers per hour. Apart from this, it could carry a warhead of four thousand kilograms.

In 1981, the Indian Air Force needed a special type of fast fighter aircraft to deal with Pakistan and China. At that time western countries like America, Britain were close to Pakistan and they were not going to give their advanced fighter aircraft to India. At that time Russia offered to sell its MiG-27 aircraft to India.

Russia even said that they will also give the license to make this aircraft to India. After this the aircraft formally joined the Indian Air Force in 1985. After getting the license from Russia, Hindustan Aerotonics Limited manufactured 165 units of MiG 27 aircraft. Apart from this, HAL also upgraded 86 aircraft.

MiG-27 fighter aircraft removed from the Air Force after the ceremony:

The Indian Air Force removed the MiG-27 aircraft in the year 2019 after a ceremony held at Air Force Station Jodhpur. The ceremony was presided over by Air Marshal SK Ghotia, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, South Western Air Command. Air Marshal Ghotia said that the aircraft was always on the frontline and played an important role in the 1999 Kargil war. The aircraft was the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s ground attack fleet for the past four decades.
