Born in a Jat family in a village in Neemkathana tehsil of Sikar district of Rajasthan, Digendra grew up in a military environment since childhood. His maternal grandfather was a freedom fighter and his father was a brave warrior of the Indian Army. During the 1947-48 war, Digendra’s father Shivdan Singh was hit by 11 bullets in the jaw, yet he did not give up. Inspired by his father, Digendra Kumar joined the 2 Rajputana Rifles.
In 1985, two years after enlisting in the Rajputana Rifles, Digendra Kumar was sent to the Indian Peace Keeping Force to campaign against Prabhakaran’s Tamil Tigers in the jungles of Sri Lanka. During this operation, in a single day, Digendra killed the terrorists, destroyed the enemy’s ammunition base and rescued the paratroopers from their possession. All this happened suddenly, when he was going by car with his general and on the way some LTTE terrorists threw a hand grenade at the general’s car from under the bridge, Digendra caught the same grenade and went back to the terrorists. was thrown.
Area commander eliminated in Kupwara:
A few years later, he was sent to Kupwara in Kashmir. Where he continued to do all the work of terrorists. He eliminated Area Commander terrorist Majeed Khan. He was awarded the Sena Medal for his gallantry and gallantry. Almost a year after this, in 1993, Digendra Kumar played an important role in freeing Hazratbal Dargah from the clutches of terrorists. For which he also got appreciation. But for Digendra these were all small achievements. The bold and fearless warrior wanted to do something big for his motherland. He also got a chance for this.
Whoever came in the way, he eliminated it quickly:
By the time of 1999, Naik Digendra Kumar alias Cobra was counted among the best commands of the army. What happened on the 13th of June this year made Digendra Kumar immortal alive. He won the top and post of Tololing situated at an altitude of 15,000 feet, but by hoisting the tricolor on it, India got the first major and important success. During this operation, he was hit by five bullets, but he did not stop, did not get tired, did not get stuck, did not go astray and kept on moving towards his target. Whatever came in his way, he was quick to eliminate it.
The then army chief General Malik had asked the plan:
After the Kargil War broke out, Digendra’s Unit 2 Rajputana Rifles was instructed to reach Kupwara within 24 hours and be ready to take up the combat front in the next 24 hours. The then Army Chief General VP Malik took the preparatory meeting. In this, Digendra Kumar explained to him his plan to climb the Tololing peak. Naik Digendra was made the commander of the deadly team as per the instructions of General Malik and Major Vivek Gupta was made his commanding officer. Completed the climb on the night of 12 June in the silence of the night with the shivering of cold on the snowy hill. The Pakistani army had built 11 bunkers there. The first and last bunker was blown up by Digendra Kumar.
It was not easy to capture the top:
When Digendra had entered the enemy’s bunker in the dark of night to blow up the first bunker, then as soon as it was realized, the enemy opened fire. During that time he got four bullets. Apart from these, two bullets were hit on his AK 47, which was missed. At that time, taking care of the safety of himself and his comrades, injured Digendra immediately threw a grenade in that bunker. After this, there was a sudden attack from behind and several comrades were seriously injured. Then his company broke those 30 attackers into pieces.
Pakistan Army Major Anwar Khan’s neck blown off:
Digendra, on the other hand, continued to move forward with some comrades and in between used injections of steroid-containing painkillers. By doing this, Digendra and his team destroyed the entire 11 bunkers. Meanwhile, at four o’clock in the morning, his last accomplice Sardar Sumer Singh Rathod had also been shot. Then with his LMG, Digendra proceeded towards the hill, then he saw Major Anwar Khan of Pakistani Army on the way. When both of them came face to face, Digendra was able to fire only one bullet from the LMG, when Anwar Khan fired at him with his pistol which hit Digendra in his leg below the waist. Then his bullets had run out. After this Anwar pounced on Digendra but Digendra held his throat and took out his dagger and slashed his neck with a jerk.
When Vajpayee said – Wow my Kaliyugi Bhima son, you killed 48:
It was about to dawn, on June 13, 1999, it was 4:30 in the morning. The tricolor started waving on the top of Tololing. Nayak Digendra was not overly excited by his victory, he was broken from inside having lost his teammates. He was seriously injured, crying. After that they don’t remember anything. When he opened his eyes, he was in the Military Hospital in Srinagar. Digendra tells that he did not know how many he killed. This came to light when the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee patted him on the back and said that wow my Kaliyugi Bhima son, you killed 48. Had he killed two more, a half century would have been scored. You are still not out. However, after this Digendra Kumar’s treatment continued for two-three years and later he retired from the army after being declared unfit. The Government of India honored him with the Maha Vir Chakra for his contribution.
