0 Story of Kargil War: A coin saved the life of Kargil War hero Yogendra Singh Yadav

A coin saved the life of Kargil War hero Yogendra Singh Yadav. He had hoisted the tricolor on the hill top after winning the Kargil war while fighting the enemies. Memories fade with the passage of time. Kargil Vijay completes 23 years. The memories of Kargil are still alive in his mind.

The same memories encourage them and give strength on every front. He says that I can never forget the day of May 20, 1999. Then I was only 19 years old and the job was two and a half years old. My wedding was on 5th May. Came home on vacation. On May 20, a call came from the headquarters. My battalion got the task of conquering Tololing hills in Dras sector.

Tololing hill was in the possession of Pakistani army. The brave soldiers of Mary Paltan hoisted the tricolor with the first victory of the Kargil war on the Tololing hill after a long battle of 22 days. After Tololing, the next task of Paltan was Tiger Hill Top.

Tiger Hill Top was completely under the control of the Pakistani army. Getting there was not easy. With passion and passion, my platoon started marching towards the enemy. The Pakistani army was on the top of the hill. The target was very easy for him.

Me and the soldiers of my platoon killed five Pakistani soldiers to clear the way. The Pakistani army blocked the way for the Indian army by firing fiercely. I reached Tiger Hill Top with my seven brave soldiers while escaping from the firing of the Pakistani army. There was firing from both sides. We were short of ammunition. I didn’t understand anything then. The passion was only to hoist the tricolor on the top of Tiger Hill. To throw dust in the eyes of the Pakistani army, we stopped firing as per the plan. Due to this the Pak army became a victim of misunderstanding.

They felt that the Indian soldiers had died in the firing. Under the strategy, suddenly attacked the Pakistani army and many Pakistanis were killed. Some Pakistani soldiers escaped and we captured Tiger Hill top. 35 minutes later, before he could celebrate the victory, there was another attack from the Pakistani side. The number of Pakistani soldiers was very high. All my comrades were killed in a one-on-one fight. I was also badly injured. There were multiple bullets in the hands and feet. The blood had fallen on the ground. Pak soldiers brutalized the martyred Indian soldiers.

The mortal remains of the martyrs were crushed with boots and bullets were fired. Lying on the ground I was watching. Pak soldiers started withdrawing. A soldier fired bullets in my arms and legs on my way. At that time I forgot the pain. Pak soldier fired a bullet in my chest. I had coins in my jacket pocket. Coins saved my life. As soon as I got shot in the chest, I realized that I would not survive. God was with me. He was numb after being shot in the hand. It felt like the hand was separate from the body. I tried to shake my hand. But the hand did not separate from the body.

I had realized that I could not die. Forgetting the pain, I gathered courage and crawled to the martyr soldiers. No one was alive. Cried a lot I had one hand grenade left. He didn’t have the strength to open it. Tried and the grenade exploded with the opening and narrowly escaped. Then he picked up his companion’s rifle and came down from a creek while firing bullets. There was nothing to eat. The body was stiff from the cold. He took himself to the base of the Indian Army.

On reaching there, informed about the complete planning of the Pakistani army. Half the box was alive on biscuits for 72 hours. After three days he regained consciousness. By then my battalion had won the Kargil war by hoisting the tricolor by capturing Tiger Hill top.
