0 CWG 2022: Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins gold for country in Birmingham despite injury

India got its second gold medal in Birmingham. In weightlifting, Jeremy Lalrinnunga created history in the 67kg category. He brought gold to the country by lifting 300 kg.

The 19-year-old from Mizoram lifted 140kg in the snatch round and 160kg in the clean and jerk. He has become the first Indian man to win gold in this Commonwealth Games. Before him, Mirabai Chanu had given gold to the country in weightlifting itself.

He was up against Waipawa Nevo of Samoa. Waipawa lifted 127kg in snatch and 166kg in clean and jerk to win silver medal. In his last attempt, he tried to lift 174 kilograms in the quest to win gold, but failed. At the same time, Ididong of Nigeria won the bronze medal by lifting 130 kg in snatch and 160 kg in clean and jerk.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Jeremy. He wrote in his tweet, “Our youth power is creating history! Congratulations to Jeremy Lalrinnunga, who has won a gold medal in his very first Commonwealth Games and also created an unprecedented Commonwealth Games record. At a young age, he has achieved immense glory and fame. Best wishes to them for their future endeavours.

Jeremy’s performance:

Snatch Round: Jeremy lifted 136 kg in his first attempt. In the second attempt, Jeremy lifted 140 kg. In the third attempt, he tried to lift 143 kg, but he failed. In this way, his best performance in the snatch round was 140 kg.

Clean and Jerk Round: Jeremy lifts 154kg in his first attempt. After this, in the second attempt, he improved his performance and lifted 160 kg. He was trying to lift 165 kg in his third attempt, but failed. During this he also got injured.

This is India’s fifth medal in weightlifting. Besides Mirabai Chanu and Lalrinnunga gold medals, Bindiyarani Devi won silver, Sanket Sargar silver and Gururaja Pujari won bronze.
