The world’s attention is now focused on the two-day summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) starting here on Thursday. US website Bloomberg has said in an analysis that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will present their alternative view of the international world order with the Samarkand summit.
Analysts have said that the Samarkand meeting has acquired a special significance due to the presence of Indian Prime Minister Modi. India has so far been considered closer to the American axis.
Xi Jinping is leaving China for the first time since the start of the Corona epidemic three years ago. In this foreign tour, he is reaching Kazakhstan on Wednesday before Samarkand in Uzbekistan. Iran will be included in the SCO during the Samarkand meeting. He will be the ninth member of this organization.
Apart from this, Belarus and Afghanistan’s applications for membership will be considered here. Prior to this, the last expansion of the SCO took place in 2017, when India and Pakistan were given membership of this organization.
SCO was established in 2001 in Shanghai, China. Its purpose then was said to be to counter extremist ideas and terrorism in Central Asia. But since then its objectives have expanded. Now from economic cooperation to working closely with global organizations like the United Nations has been included in its agenda.
Apart from China, India, and Pakistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are its member countries. The permanent office of SCO is in Beijing.
According to experts, all eyes will be on Xi Jinping in Samarkand. Trey McEver, co-founder of the research firm Trivium China, told Bloomberg: “Xi Jinping is trying to reorient global affairs, so that Western institutions can be removed from the central role. They want to encourage groups and institutions that are more suited to China’s interests and its worldview.
Li Zhanshu, speaker of China’s National People’s Congress, visited Russia last week. According to the Russian news agency Tass, there he said that Russia and China would counter the expansion of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Lee said- ‘We will fight together against their grandeur.’
Turkish President Razib Tayib Erdoan will also attend the SCO meeting. The Presidents of Belarus and Mongolia have also been invited here.
On the other hand, according to observers, the Samarkand meeting with the presence of Prime Minister Modi can be successful in sending the message that the major emerging countries of the world are together rejecting the Western agenda.
Analysts have pointed out that the SCO countries now account for 42 per cent of the world’s population, while their combined GDP is as high as 25 per cent of global GDP.
A US adviser associated with the think tank Eurasia Group told the website NikEasia.com that Xi Jinping continues to give priority to non-Western countries in his foreign policy. That is why after the epidemic, he has made the SCO summit meeting the first point in his foreign trip.
