0 Janmashtami 2022: Why Janmashtami is celebrated for 2 days? Know the difference between Smart and Vaishnav Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami 2022 Date and Time: Krishna Janmashtami is considered one of the most auspicious and important festivals to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. It is a highly significant festival among Hindus as Lord Vishnu incarnated on earth as Lord Sri Krishna. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born five thousand years ago in the Dwapar Yuga at midnight in the city of Mathura.

Krishna Janmashtami is a popular and much awaited festival and is celebrated all over India with different names like Gokulashtami, Satam Aatham, Sri Krishnashtami, Sri Krishna Jayanti and Ashtami Rohini. Temples are decorated on this occasion. Kirtans are sung, bells are blown, conch shells are played and Sanskrit hymns are sung in praise of Lord Krishna.

Special spiritual gatherings are organized at this time in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Pilgrims from all over India attend these festive celebrations. But Krishna Janmashtami is often celebrated for 2 days, one day by Smarta and the other by Vaishnavas. Let us know why Janmashtami of Smartas and Vaishnavas happens on different days.

Why are there two Krishna Ashtami dates?

Janmashtami basically falls on two consecutive days according to the sect. Vaishnava sampradaya and Smarta sampradaya are two sects in particular. When Janmashtami Tithi is common then both Vaishnava Sampradaya and Smarta Sampradaya observe the same date and celebrate on the same day. But if the dates are different then Smarta sect celebrates on the first date and Vaishnava sect celebrates on a later date.

The people of northern India follow a consensus and the birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated on the same day. It is based on the premise of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) which is a society based on Vaishnava principles. The maximum number of followers of ISKCON are also followers of Vaishnavism.

Smarta followers do not follow Krishna birth date which is based on ISKCON because they see a difference between Smarta rituals and Vaishnava rituals. Vaishnava culture is committed to Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra and they celebrate festivals accordingly but Smarta culture prefers Saptami Tithi. According to Vaishnava followers, the festival of Krishna Janmashtami falls on the Navami and Ashtami tithi of the Hindu calendar.

Significance of Janmashtami Festival:

According to the Hindu calendar, the occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Shri Krishna Janmashtami usually falls in Rohini Nakshatra in August-September.

An interesting and important aspect of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is the Dahi Handi ritual. The festival of Dahi Handi signifies the most beloved activity of Lord Shri Krishna. Shri Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated till midnight because Lord Krishna was born at that time.
