0 China heatwave: Heat-stricken China is making artificial rain

People are suffering in China stricken by the scorching heat. A part of China’s Yangtze River has completely dried up. Due to the record breaking heat, crops and livestock are suffering huge losses. In such a situation, the administration has started preparations for artificial rain.

A comprehensive weather modification program has been announced in central China’s Hubei province. Here planes are deployed to drive sticks of silver iodide into the clouds to induce rain. Artificial rain is also being prepared in other areas of the Yangtze, but the program has been put on hold in some drought-hit parts due to thinning clouds.

Meteorologists said on Wednesday, citing data from the National Climate Center, that the heat wave in China has lasted for 64 days. This is the longest heatwave since 1961. Data was collected from 1,680 weather stations that recorded temperatures above 35 °C (95 °F) and 1,426 stations that recorded temperatures above 37 °C.

A total of 262 stations recorded temperatures above 40 degree Celsius which is also a record. A weather station in Zhushan County in China’s northwestern Hubei province recorded a temperature of 44.6 degrees Celsius. The southeastern municipality of Chongqing recorded a temperature of 44.5 °C, while Lingshaw County in northern Hebei province recorded a temperature of 44.2 °C.

Many industries closed in China due to heat:

Industries in China have been affected the most by the heat. Drought conditions in the southwest of China have led to water shortages in reservoirs, affecting hydroelectric power generation. After that there is a power cut. Solar panel manufacturers in Sichuan province as well as companies producing cement and urea have been shut down. They have been instructed to save electricity for five days.
