At least 26 people died of burns as a fire broke out in the forests of Algeria. According to the information, since the beginning of August, there have been 106 incidents of fire in Algeria so far. Due to this, more than 2,500 hectares of forest area has been destroyed.

The country’s Interior Minister Kamel Beldjoud said on Wednesday that at least 26 people were killed and dozens more injured in forest fires in 14 districts of northern Algeria. Beldjoud told state television that 24 people were killed in a fire in El Tarf, near the Tunisia border, in addition to two others in Setif.

The civil protection agency in Setif said two women, a 58-year-old mother and her 31-year-old daughter, were killed in the city. Meanwhile, people were seen fleeing their homes in Souk Ahras, east near Algeria’s border with Tunisia, as the fire spread before firefighting helicopters could be deployed. Officials said earlier it was reported that four people were burnt in Souk Ahras and 41 others had difficulty in breathing. Media reports said 350 residents were rescued from the fire.

There is no update on the number of people injured in the fires in other areas. Due to the fire, the country’s military gendarmerie has closed many roads. The civil protection agency said, “14 villas (administrative councils) are on fire at forty-nine places. At the same time, there is nothing left due to the fire in 16 places in El Tarf, which is the most affected area.

Helicopters have used bambi buckets to drop water on fires in three administrative councils, including Souk Ahras. Since the beginning of August, there have been 106 fire incidents in Algeria. Because of these, more than 2,500 hectares of forest have been destroyed. Beldjoud said that in some places people themselves had set fires. After the deaths on Wednesday, the total number of people killed in forest fires this summer has now risen to 30.

Algeria is the largest country in Africa, but has only 4.1 million hectares (10.1 million acres) of forest. Every year the northern region of this country is affected by forest fires. This problem has become even more serious due to climate change. Last year also at least 90 people died in forest fires in northern Algeria, destroying more than 100,000 hectares of forest.
