Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai India (CSKvMI): The 59th match of IPL 2022 will be played between CSK vs MI, the match will start at 07:30 PM IST on 12 May 2022 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India
Team winner Prediction:
Key Points:
- Chennai Super Kings have been in excellent form ever since MS Dhoni has taken over and will be brimming with confidence
- With pitches getting slower, the Chennai Super Kings’ bowling attack looks a lot more equipped to not only keep things tight but also pick wickets
- Mumbai Indians are a little too over-reliant on Rohit Sharma to play long and control their innings, especially with Suryakumar Yadav out injured
CSK vs MI Analysis:
If one were to predict the two teams lurking at the bottom-most spot on the ladder, not many would have named even one of Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, let alone both. So unpredictable this edition of the tournament has been that the three most successful sides in the history of competition are languishing at the bottom of the ladder with one of them already knocked out. Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings are hanging in the tournament, but only by a thin thread.
Up next in the competition, Chennai Super Kings will have one more assignment to pass to stay in the reckoning against a side known to be their arch-rivals. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings will be locking horns in a match of mighty importance for both these sides, albeit for different reasons.

Pitch and Weather Conditions:
A brave call at the toss? Only thrice in 15 games at the Wankhede stadium this season has a captain opted to bat first. Two of those ended in victories with one of them coming just three days ago when RCB beat SRH by 67 runs. The other venues have offered more merits to change toss strategies and set a target, but there’s now scope to do that at the Wankhede too, as evidenced by the level of control that RCB enjoyed against SRH.
Team Preview:
Chennai Super Kings (CSK):
Chennai Super Kings had their best night of the tournament in their previous match as they thumped Delhi Capitals in a rather one-sided contest. They were so good in that match that even MS Dhoni called it a perfect game at the post-match presentation ceremony. Despite that performance, Chennai Super Kings are still very far from a playoff spot but they will be keeping their hopes up as it is still a possibility. A win here in this match will certainly help their cause and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
After their last win, they moved to the eighth spot but with Kolkata Knight Riders registering a massive win over Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings dropped down to ninth position. Given the position they are in at the moment, a win here could push them to the sixth spot, at least in the interim. Along with that, they would hope for some results to fall their way in the next few matches and if that happens, Chennai Super Kings will be back in the race big time.
Chennai Super Kings have found plenty of positives in their last few games. In Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad, they have an opening pair that can take on pacers and seamers alike. They have been so good in the last few matches that the absence of Ravi Jadeja with the bat hasn’t really been felt. On the bowling front too, the likes of Simarjeet Singh and Mukesh Chaudhary have been brilliant. Together they have kept batsmen on their toes in the powerplay and the same would be expected of them in this upcoming match as well.
On paper, Chennai Super Kings have an immaculately balanced side, especially with pitches slowing down and their bowlers doing well. Maheesh Theekshana has been an invaluable addition to their attack and with Moeen Ali beginning to contribute well with the ball, Chennai Super Kings can utilize the conditions well. If anything, they might miss the services of Ravi Jadeja with the ball, especially given that he did pretty well with the ball in his last two outings.
Injuries have really hampered Chennai Super Kings plans in the tournament but they have finally found a settled team. Overall, Chennai Super Kings seem to be having their bases covered in both departments of the game. If they can continue to play to their strengths in this upcoming match as well, they would be an incredibly difficult side to beat especially with the conditions beginning to take a turn.
“What worked well for me was, initially when I started the tournament, I wasn’t over-thinking, I was just going and batting, like I used to do. My focus was on giving a good start to the team. But I think later on, somewhere I was trying to finish the game… maybe I lost my focus in the first six overs. I had a chat with the coach and captain also, and they just said, ‘If you can give us a good start, it will be helpful for the team, so you don’t have to think about finishing the game. If you are set there in the middle, you will anyway do that.”
Ishan Kishan
Likely XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Robin Uthappa, Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, Dwayne Bravo, Maheesh Theekshana, Simarjeet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary

Mumbai Indians (MI):
Just when Mumbai Indians looked like imparting some momentum into their journey, they suffered a massive 52-run defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders despite some individual heroics. They are already knocked out of the race for the playoffs and this game wouldn’t mean much for them as far as qualification scenarios are concerned. However, they have nothing to lose and would want to win this match, which is against their arch-rivals, to keep their chin and pride up.
As it currently stands on the points table, Mumbai Indians are placed at the bottom with just four points to their name from eleven matches. Even if they win all matches from here, they would end up with just ten points and that isn’t going to cut it for them. Besides, they have a pretty poor net run rate of -0.894, which just demonstrates how poor they have been in all facets of the game.
With the tournament already over, Mumbai Indians might be looking forward to building the squad for the next edition. For that very reason they have signed Tristan Stubbs and he might come into the eleven in the upcoming might. We might also see Dewald Brevis make his way into the team to take the one-down position with Suryakumar Yadav ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
On the bowling front, we might see them try their domestic contingent one more time just to evaluate their options for the next season. Basil Thampi can come in for Riley Meredith to open up an overseas spot. Also, it is pretty likely that they might well decide to replace an out-of-form Kieron Pollard with a specialist batsman.
All in all, Mumbai Indians may be down but they still have a lot of firepower left. A poor auction and injuries to their key players at the wrong time didn’t help their cause but they do have some match-winners available in Rohit Sharma, Tim David, Tilak Verma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ishan Kishan. They would need to be at their very best against this high-flying Chennai Super Kings and if they can do that, they will certainly be in business big time.
“I am not a big fan of maths. Even in school I wasn’t good at it. Thinking of the NRR doesn’t help. You just want to enjoy the IPL. When two other teams are playing, you don’t want to be under pressure and thinking. You just have to think about what to do in the next game. If we make the playoffs, great. But even if we don’t it’s not the end of the world.”
MS Dhoni
Likely XI: Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Ramandeep Singh/Anmolpreet Singh, Tim David, Kieron Pollard, Daniel Sams, Murugan Ashwin, Kumar Karthikeya, Jasprit Bumrah, Riley Meredith
