The storm caused by the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan is not over yet. Taiwan has taken a big step under increasing tension with China, adding deadly fighter aircraft and other equipment including large weapons to its defense fleet. Taiwan on Thursday proposed to spend $19 billion in the defense sector next year to further strengthen its security.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen’s cabinet has earmarked $19.41 billion in the total proposed defense budget, an annual increase of 13.9 percent on an annual basis. This includes additional special funds for fighter aircraft and other equipment.
However, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounts and Statistics did not specify where the money would go. Taiwan has made this record increase in its defense budget, which is the highest compared to the increase in the country’s defense spending. Taiwan’s annual growth since 2017 has been below four percent. The purpose of this increase is to include weapons in the defense fleet.
Special attention to the cost of aircraft:
Minister of Statistics Chu Jar Ming said that it has become necessary for us to increase defense spending. We always give priority to security and national security. So the operating cost goes up significantly for the budget. He said special attention would be paid to costs such as fuel and maintenance for aircraft and ships sent to counter Chinese military activities near Taiwan.
Difficult situation in China due to UN report on Xinjiang:
The Chinese administration is facing a tough situation after UN Special Envoy Tomaya Obokata confirmed China’s involvement in the suppression of the minority Uighur Muslim population in Xinjiang province.
Human rights activists have also expressed concern over the plight of the Uighurs and the boycott of products manufactured with forced labor in Xinjiang causing much trouble to China.
In the wake of this report, the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Japan have stopped buying products made in Xinjiang from China. This is causing a big blow to the Chinese economy.
