0 Egypt: Massive fire breaks out in Coptic church in Egypt, 41 killed, 55 injured

At least 41 people were killed and 55 were injured after a fire broke out in a Coptic church in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. Local health officials said that the incident happened in the Abu Sefin Church in Imbaba area. It is built amidst dense population. According to the police, the actual cause of the fire is not yet known, but according to preliminary investigation, it could be a short-circuit.

Hundreds of people were present in the church at the time of the incident. There was a stampede when the fire broke out, due to which many other people also got caught in the fire. Sadness is being expressed across the country over the incident. President Abdul Fateh al-Sisi spoke to Coptic Christian Pope Tawdros II on the phone and offered condolences.

The president wrote on Facebook, ‘I am closely following the developments of the tragic accident. All concerned agencies and institutions have been directed to take necessary measures so that relief can be provided to the victims. The Muslim-majority country of Egypt also has a population of about 10 million Christians. Minority communities living here often complain of discrimination.
