Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday asked “free gifting” states to provide free facilities to the people only after reviewing their financial position and make budgetary provisions accordingly.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement of distributing ‘free ki rewari’, Sitharaman said it is good to start a debate on free facilities.
State governments should make provision in the budget to fulfill the promise of freebies: Sitharaman
Sitharaman said during an interactive program organized by the BJP’s economic cell in Bengaluru that “You can make any promise. Suppose when a state government makes a promise and talks about giving some facilities to the people free of cost. It could be electricity, it could be something else. I am not saying that you should not do this, but do it only after reviewing your financial position. You promised during the election and You won, come back to the government, but not sure how you fulfill your promise, ensure that your budget should have a provision for it.”
In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently took a dig at the “free gift” and called it a stumbling block to the country’s development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said at an event in Panipat that giving “free gifts” hinders India’s efforts to become self-reliant and also puts a burden on the taxpayers. It is worth noting that in Punjab and Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is providing free electricity and other facilities to the people.
Need for a good and logical debate on free rewari:
Responding to a question on the financial burden of free gifts on the state, he said that “I think it is a good sign that the Prime Minister has mentioned about free gifts and their impact on the economy and has now taken a lot of interest on the subject.” is going on and discussion has started but a good and logical debate is needed.Because we need to understand its basic principle but any attempt to weaken or weaken this debate is harmful for this country Because we all know that governments have responsibilities.
The Finance Minister said that governments really have a responsibility to ensure that good education reaches all its citizens, especially the poorer sections of the society. In addition, basic health care is taken care of. Sitharaman further said that when poor people are involved in such schemes, the poor should also be able to use it.”
In this regard, he said that various committees appointed since independence have always insisted on spending at least six per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on health, education and other basic needs. Sitharaman said that till date no government has denied its responsibility towards education or allowed only private education to be promoted. Sitharaman said that she will not give a list of what should and should not be given for free. She prefers to leave the matter for the people to decide.
However, he said that if the financial condition of the state is not taken into account then how can we burden the free electricity power generating companies and distribution companies. He said, “You had promised to provide free electricity to the public up to 300 units or whatever 300 units. For that you know how many people should get it, you have made a provision for it in your budget.”
Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes the needy not dependent but empowers. Sitharaman mentioned the schemes of the government with the help of which the needy have been empowered. He said that the Modi government started PM Jan-Dhan Yojana for financial inclusion and under this bank accounts of more and more people were opened. Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme was launched. So that the needy can get its benefit directly.
The Finance Minister said that to help small shopkeepers and businessmen in business, Mudra Loan Scheme was started by the Prime Minister so that even small amount of loan can be availed by these businessmen from the bank. During the Corona period, the self-funding scheme was started by the government for street vendors and they were given loans from banks to work.
Many programs like Standup and Startup India empowered people:
He said that many programs like Standup India, Startup India were started by the government through which empowerment of the people took place. The Finance Minister said these things indirectly targeting those political parties who distribute free revri for political interest.
Two days ago (on Thursday), Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had accused the central government of keeping education and health in the category of free rewari. Terming Kejriwal’s allegation as completely wrong, the Finance Minister had said that education and health cannot be kept in the category of free rewari in a welfare state.
Sitharaman has also said that we want to assure the people that continuous efforts are being made to bring back those who have escaped from the banks by fraudulently. Their properties are being auctioned and the money is being given back to the banks and this process is going on continuously. He said that banks are raising funds from the market. Banks are now making profit.
