0 CWG 2022: Indian badminton team beat Malaysia 3-1 in the final

The Indian badminton team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Malaysia in the final of the mixed team event. With this defeat, the Indian badminton team’s dream of winning gold in the Commonwealth Games for the second time in a row remained unfulfilled. India had to be content with silver. The Indian badminton team won the gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Then India defeated Malaysia in the final.

This is the fourth medal for India on the fifth day (Tuesday). Earlier on Tuesday, the Indian women’s lawn ball team and men’s table tennis team won gold. At the same time, weightlifter Vikas had won the silver medal. Overall, it was India’s 13th medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Medal winners of India in Birmingham Commonwealth Games:

  • 5 Gold: Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Anchita Sheuly, Women’s Lawn Ball Team, Table Tennis Men’s Team.
  • 5 Silver: Sanket Sargari, Bindiyarani Devi, Sushila Devi, Vikas Thakur, Indian Badminton Team.
  • 3 Bronze: Gururaja Pujari, Vijay Kumar Yadav, Harjinder Kaur.

In the first match, in the men’s doubles, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost to the pair of Teng Fong Aron Chia and Wuyi Yik Soh. The Malaysian pair won the first game 21-18 and the second game 21-15. In this way the Malaysian team went 1-0 up.

After this, in the second match, PV Sindhu defeated Jin Wei Goh of Malaysia and leveled the score 1-1. The first game was won by Sindhu 22-20. There was a tough competition between the two in the first game. At one point the score was 18-18 and then 20-20. Sindhu then registered a 22-20 win by winning two consecutive points. In the second game, Sindhu won a tight match 21-17.

Kidambi Srikanth lost the third match against Ang Tje Yong. Srikanth lost the first game 21-19 in a tight match. After this, the second game was won by Srikanth 21-6. In the third and deciding game, Ang Tje Yong defeated Srikanth 21-16. In this way the Indian team fell 2-1 behind. After this, India had to win both the remaining matches for the gold.

The women’s doubles match took place in the fourth match. In this, Malaysia’s Kung Lee Peerli Tan and Muralitharan Thinah defeated Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand 21-18, 21-17. In this way, Malaysia defeated India 3-1 to capture the gold, while India had to be content with silver.
