Indian chess stalwart Viswanathan Anand defeated Maxim Vacheyer Ligrave in 40 moves in the first round of the classical section at the Norway Chess Tournament here. The victory over the French player earned the Indian Grand Master 3 points.
America’s Wesley So defeated Timur Rajabov in the first round and is joint top with Anand, while Magnus Carlsen drew with China’s Wang Head. Earlier in the Biltz category, Anand had finished fourth in the tournament after defeating world champion Carlsen in the seventh round.
