In a bid to enhance cooperation between navies in the Indian Ocean, China and Pakistan on Sunday engaged in the ‘Sea Guardian-2’ exercise off the Shanghai coast by deploying their new high-tech naval ships and fighter jets to jointly deal with maritime security threats. began.
“The Navy of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Navy of Pakistan will conduct joint naval exercises in the maritime and airfields off Shanghai in mid-July,” PLA Navy spokesman Captain Liu Wensheng said in a statement.
Official media informed that the two navies held the inaugural ceremony of the second edition of the maritime defense exercise on Sunday.
“The exercise is a general arrangement according to an annual program and is not intended to target any third party,” Liu said.
According to the state-run Global Times report, “PLA Eastern Theater Command Navy sent frigate Jiangtan, corvette Shuozhou, supply ship Qiandaohu, a submarine, an early warning aircraft, two fighter aircraft and a helicopter for the drill while a Pakistani Navy warship Taimur joined the exercise.”
Taimur is the second of the four powerful warships built by China. It was delivered to the Pakistani Navy in Shanghai on 23 June. The warship 054A/P-Class in Tugril was inducted into the Pakistan Navy fleet in January.
The exercise, with the theme of “jointly dealing with maritime security threats”, will include training courses including joint strikes against maritime targets, joint tactical maneuvers, joint anti-submarine warfare and joint support for damaged ships, Liu said.
Liu said the exercise aims to enhance defense cooperation, promote professional and technical exchanges, deepen the traditional friendship between the two countries and the two navies, and promote the development of an all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between China and Pakistan.
