For the purpose of clarity about the Agnipath plan, the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Defense is going to hold an important meeting today. The meeting will be chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Minister of State Ajay Bhatt, the three Army Chiefs and Defense Secretary will be present in the meeting.
Important meeting before monsoon session:
Sources familiar with the meeting say that it is a private initiative by the Defense Ministry to allay the opposition’s fears about the Agneepath scheme and find a clear political solution. The meeting assumes significance in the context of laying the facts before various members of Parliament just ahead of the upcoming monsoon session. Many senior members of Parliament including Mallikarjun Kharge, Manish Tewari, Supriya Sule, P Wilson are part of this committee.
Defense Minister alert about the possibility of creating a ruckus by the opposition:
Sources said that “Very soon the monsoon session of Parliament is about to begin and the opposition parties will definitely raise this particular issue and they will try to create a ruckus. Hence this initiative has been taken by the Defense Minister to address the issues of the opposition and the Agneepath plan.” To be given clarity as to what is asked about it.”
Let us inform that Rajnath Singh had also taken a personal initiative to brief senior opposition leaders on issues like India’s relations with China and LAC. At that time too Rajnath Singh had personally met and clarified the issues with former Defense Minister Sharad Pawar and AK Antony among others.
As announced by the Defense Ministry on July 2, the Indian Army and Navy have started the registration process for the Agniveer programme. Under this scheme, Agniveers will be enlisted for four years in the Army, Navy and Air Force. Up to 25 per cent of them may be retained in regular service or re-enlisted after four years on the basis of merit, readiness and medical fitness. The remaining 75 per cent Agniveers will be retired by giving a “Service Fund” package of Rs 11-12 lakh. Additionally, they will be given bank loans and skill certificates for their second career. So far, 7,49,899 applications have been received by the Air Force for recruitment under this scheme.

Agneepath scheme was announced on June 14, 2022. Under the scheme, now the registration process has started for recruitment in all the three wings of the army for four years. After the release of the scheme, there were violent protests against it in several states for almost a week and various opposition parties demanded its withdrawal.
