Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will take to the field on Sunday (July 24) morning with the hopes of crores of Indians. He would like to create history by hitting a golden target in the final of the World Athletics in Eugene, USA. If Neeraj wins the medal, he will become the first Indian man to do so in the history of this tournament. Prior to her, veteran athlete Anju Bobby George won the historic bronze medal in 2003.

Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Jakob Wadlejcho of the Czech Republic and Julian Weber of Germany are also among the top medal contenders. 12 players in the final:
Apart from 24-year-old Neeraj, 34 other athletes participated in this competition. Everyone was placed in two groups. Neeraj was in the first group and Rohit was placed in group B. Neeraj made the third best throw of his career and made it to the final. A total of 12 players, including Neeraj and Rohit, have made it to the finals of javelin throw. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejc also made it to the final by throwing a javelin 85.23m in his first attempt.

Chopra has consistently performed well this season. He scored his personal best twice. He threw 89.30m in Pavo Nurmi, Finland on 14 June and 89.94m in Stockholm Diamond League on 30 June. He missed just 6 centimeters from 90 meters. During this he won the title in Kuortane in Finland with a time of 86.69m.

If 24-year-old Neeraj Chopra wins the gold medal, he will be the third player in the world to have won a gold at the World Championships immediately after the Olympics. Earlier, Norway’s Andris Thorkildsen (2008-09) and Czech Republic’s world record holder Jjes Jelezny (2000-01 and 1992-93) achieved the feat.

Apart from Neeraj, Rohit Yadav has qualified for the javelin throw final. He finished sixth in Group B and 11th overall. Triple jumper Aldoz Paul will jump for a medal at 6:30 am before Neeraj Chopra’s final.

America’s Sydney McLaughlin won the gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles with a new world record. He won the first career gold medal with a timing of 50.68 seconds. Femke Bol (52.27 sec) of the Netherlands won the silver and defending champion Dalilah Muhammad (53.13 sec) of the US won the bronze. Earlier this year, Sydney had set a new world record at the Nationals with 51.41 seconds.
