0 UNICEF Report: Highest 36.5 million children displaced after World War II

More than 36.5 million children have been displaced worldwide due to conflict, war and violence. According to UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), this figure of displacement of children is the highest since World War II. The report does not include figures for children displaced in 2022 due to the Russo-Ukraine war or due to natural disasters.

According to the report, 13.7 crore refugee children and 22.8 million internally displaced children are also included in the displaced children. UNICEF says that more than a third, or 36 percent, of displaced children are from sub-Saharan Africa, a quarter, or 25 percent, from Europe and Central Asia, and 13 percent from the Middle East and North Africa.

The record numbers are a direct result of widespread crises, including the intense and prolonged conflict in Afghanistan, and the fragility in countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo or the devastating effects of Yemen.

Displaced children in dire need of healthcare, education and protection:

UNICEF Executive Director Katherine Russell said she hopes the growing number of displaced children will force governments to stop the displacement of children as well as ensure that displaced children receive education, security and other needs. According to the report, only 50 percent of the refugee children are studying in primary school.

Less than a quarter of teenage refugees are enrolled in secondary school. These displaced children are in dire need of healthcare, education and protection.

28% of victims children are victims of human trafficking:

Children who are separated from their parents or have no parent with displaced children are at greater risk of human trafficking. The risk of such children becoming victims of violence, exploitation increases. According to UNICEF, about 28 percent of victims of human trafficking are children.
