Romanian’s veteran tennis player Simona Halep defeated Paula Badosa in straight sets to enter the last 16 of the Madrid Open tennis tournament.
Madrid Open two-time champion Halep picked up 21 ‘winners’ to beat second-seeded Badosa 6-3, 6-1. Halep won titles here in 2016 and 2017.
This is the first time in nine years that Halep has not been seeded here. She is playing in a competition for the first time since participating in the Indian Wells tournament in March.
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka defeated Tamara Zidansek 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours and 20 minutes.
In other matches, eighth seed Ons Jabur defeated Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 and Belinda Bencic defeated Karolina Muchova 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. America’s Amanda Anisimova also had to fight for three sets to win over Petra Martich.
