Key Points:

RCB vs PBKS Analysis:

The league stage of the IPL is similar to a 10,000m race where teams pace themselves for the final sprint. With just two games left in the league stage of RCB, the franchise will be looking to come out of the mid-table mess and qualify for the playoffs. A win against their next rivals Punjab Kings will help them get closer to their immediate goal of qualifying for the next stage of the tournament. RCB will enter the game on the back of morale-boosting victories against southern neighbors – Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

RCB’s top order suffered a setback during the league stage. However, Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar have allayed those concerns in the last few matches. In fact, du Plessis has had a curious tournament – three fifty-plus scores, five with single-digit scores. Virat Kohli’s form remains poor even after scoring just 216 runs at a strike rate of 111.34. Few tracks have offered movement this season and this has been a reason for RCB’s top-order, especially at the start of the season. Down the order, after a few quiet games, Dinesh Karthik again found his mojo against CSK and SRH. RCB also has a strong performance from the lower middle order.

Bowling looks to be in good hands. Josh Hazlewood has combined tough length with some bowling smarts to pick up 13 wickets. The long seamer has been used consistently at all stages of the game. Wanindu Hasaranga has been dodging opponents with his deadly googlies and is the second highest wicket-taker this season. He is also the highest wicket taker (16 scalps) in the middle overs. If there is one minor leak that needs to be plugged in the bowling department, it is the lack of Mohammad Siraj.

Meanwhile, with only five wins out of 11, PBKS are grappling with a familiar story that has left the team inconsistent. To make matters worse, his NRR of -231 is also not impressive. Jonny Bairstow worked up the top-order boost in the previous game, but Mayank Agarwal could not get his form back in his new batting position in the middle order. Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma, on the other hand, have found the right gear but it has been compensated by Shah Rukh Khan’s modest form. PBKS also needs to mend some holes in the bowling department. He has taken the second lowest number of wickets in the middle part of the innings and has the worst economy rate in that period this season. The franchise will once again depend on Kagiso Rabada and Rahul Chahar to deliver the crucial strike.

Date: 13 May, 2022
Time: 07:30 PM (IST)
Venue: Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, India

Pitch and Weather Conditions:

The last game that was played at the Brabourne stadium – Mumbai Indians versus Gujarat Titans – offered a bit of grip for the bowlers. However, that game was played on May 6 and one expects a fresh pitch for tomorrow’s match. So it could turn out to be good conditions for batting. The humidity is expected to be around 70 per cent tomorrow, and there could be chances of some dew.

Team Preview:

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB):

Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan have been dismissed four times each against spin while Bairstow has fallen twice to spin in IPL 2022. Hasaranga did dismiss Mayank, albeit via a dragged down delivery at the start of the tournament. It would also be interesting to see the battle between Hasaranga and Livingstone plus Jitesh. Livingstone has a habit of taking on the spinners with shots over midwicket. But he would be up against Hasaranga’s scrambled seam varieties – googly and leg-break.

Likely XI: Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (c), Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Mahipal Lomror, Shahbaz Ahmed, Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Hazlewood

Punjab Kings (PBKS):

Chahar has dislodged the dangerous Karthik twice in T20s. One of the occasions was in IPL 2020 when Karthik employed a premeditated paddle sweep only to be tricked by a slow-turning leg-break. Karthik perhaps would remember that dismissal and not try the shot again versus Chahar. On the other hand, Kagiso Rabada has dismissed his former South African skipper, Du Plessis, thrice in the shortest format. Even though a couple of those dismissals came on the back of Du Plessis looking to press the accelerator. Rabada has also accounted for the scalp of Glenn Maxwell thrice in T20s. Sandeep Sharma has struggled for form this season, but he has picked up Kohli’s scalp seven times.

Likely XI: Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Mayank Agarwal (c), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Liam Livingstone, Rishi Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh, Sandeep Sharma
