The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a major setback on Friday when team captain Rupinder Pal Singh was ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup hockey tournament due to a wrist injury. According to a statement issued by Hockey India, drag-flicker Rupinder sustained an injury during a practice session, forcing him to withdraw from the hockey tournament starting May 23 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
He will be replaced by Neelam Sanjeev Jess for the tournament. Veteran defender Birender Lakra will lead the side as captain, while striker SV Sunil was made the vice-captain. Coach BJ Cariappa said it was unfortunate that Rupinder got injured during the practice session.
Cariappa said- Olympic hero Rupinder will not be a part of Asia Cup. We will miss him. Birender and Sunil are highly experienced and have been part of the leadership group for many years. We have plenty of pool options available. We have a very impressive group of players.
In the Asia Cup, India are placed in Pool A along with Japan, Pakistan and hosts Indonesia, while Malaysia, Korea, Oman and Bangladesh are in Pool B. There are 10 players in the team who will make their debut in the senior team.
