The US is considering options for sanctions against China to prevent it from attacking Taiwan. At the same time the European Union is coming under diplomatic pressure from Taipei to do the same. This information has been given by news agency Reuters quoting sources familiar with the discussion.
The sources said the reaction to fears of a Chinese aggression, which has escalated with increasing military tensions in the Taiwan Strait. After this, discussions are going on in Washington on sanctions, on the other hand Taipei is trying to put pressure on its side with separate EU envoys. Both these processes are currently in the preliminary stage.
In both cases, the idea is to bring in sanctions beyond measures already taken in the West to restrict some trade and investment with China in sensitive technologies such as computer chips and telecommunications equipment. Though sources did not give any details on what is being considered, the assumption of sanctions on the world’s second largest economy and one of the biggest links in the global supply chain raises questions about the feasibility.
Nazak Nikakhtar, a former senior US Department of Commerce official, said that “imposing sanctions on China is likely a far more complicated process than imposing sanctions on Russia, given that the US and its allies have a negative impact on the Chinese economy have a wide relationship with him.”
