About one in 110 people in Uttarakhand consume drugs made from cannabis. This is 0.9% of the total population. This percentage of the state is more than 0.7 than the national average.
In such a situation, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has set a target of making the state drug-free within three years. However, how effective the police is in this, it will tell the time to come, but it is a matter of concern for both the government and the police.
During the workshop in Police Lines, there was a lot of concern among the officers about this matter. In this case, the STF has reviewed all the studies across the country. This worrying situation of Uttarakhand is seen in the matter of taking drugs. The organization has done this study on the addicts of charas and ganja. According to this, about 1.30 crore people across the country are addicted to charas and ganja.
This is about 0.7% of the total population, while in Uttarakhand this percentage is 0.9. This number is currently 1.12 lakh according to the estimated population. According to this, out of about 110 people in the state, one person consumes charas and ganja.
According to the police, most of the supply of charas and ganja in Uttarakhand comes from neighboring states. Its cultivation is banned in the state. More or less such restrictions are applicable in neighboring states too, but Uttarakhand has emerged as a market for smugglers there. DGP Ashok Kumar said that on the instructions of the Chief Minister, this average has to be brought down to zero. A deadline of 2025 has been announced for this.
15,000 people do drugs in Doon:
SSP Dalip Singh Kunwar told that he has prepared a report at the police station level, people who are living in drug de-addiction centers. People who came in contact with him have also been contacted. The police have made inquiries in their respective areas. Due to this the figure of drug users has come to about 15,000. For this an action plan is being prepared on a large scale.
Most drug addicts have become smugglers:
Until recently, most of the people caught by the police were smugglers. That is, they used to sell drugs here by bringing them from outside, but at present the situation has changed. Those who are intoxicated are now being pushed into the business by drug peddlers. Of the actions taken by the police from 2019 to 2021, only 108 smugglers have been caught, while 1,956 smugglers who are themselves drug addicts have been caught.
Team will be formed in cases with commercial volume:
During the workshop, ADG Law and Order v Murugeshan directed the police to conduct a better investigation into the action of commercial narcotics and said that if any such case comes to the fore, then a separate team will be formed for the investigation, to break the chain of smugglers
