The US has claimed that it has killed the leader of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri in a drone strike. This is the biggest blow to Al Qaeda since the 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden.
According to US officials, Zawahiri was shot down by a CIA drone in Afghanistan. Several media reports also suggested that Ayman al-Zawahiri, a prominent al-Qaeda leader, was killed in a weekend US strike in Afghanistan.
However, now this news has been confirmed by President Joe Biden himself in his address. In his address on Monday evening, President Biden said that ‘justice has won. Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has been killed in an airstrike in Kabul. Clearly, if you are a threat to our people, America will find you and drive you out, no matter where you hide, no matter how long it takes.’
Biden said that on Saturday, on my instructions, a drone strike was successfully carried out in Kabul, Afghanistan, in which Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed. This is another step towards bringing justice to the victims of the 11 November 2001 attack. In the end he said – now justice has been served. Biden said that now I will never allow Afghanistan to be a safe place for terrorists at all. Also, I will keep in mind that this does not happen in future also.
Earlier on Monday afternoon, the White House announced that Joe Biden would address the nation about “a successful counter-terrorism operation” in the evening, but the White House did not name anyone. Although several media reports named the man killed in the US air strike as al-Zawahiri, the number two al-Qaeda leader after Osama bin Laden.
Zawahiri helped in 9/11 attacks:
Zawahiri, an Egyptian doctor and surgeon, helped hijack four planes in the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. Two of these planes collided with both the towers of the World Trade Center (WTC). While the third plane collided with the US Ministry of Defense ie Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed on a farm in Shankville. 3,000 people were killed in this incident.
Escaped from Afghanistan:
Bin Laden and Zawahiri both escaped when US forces toppled Afghanistan’s Taliban government in late 2001 following the September 11 attacks. Later bin Laden was killed by US forces in Pakistan in 2011.
Drone attack was done on Sunday:
One of the US officials told the news agency Reuters that on Sunday, the CIA conducted a drone strike in the Afghan capital of Kabul. A senior administration official said the US has launched an anti-terrorist operation against al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. The operation was a complete success and there were no civilian casualties. This attack was done as part of counter terrorism operation in Afghanistan.
Question on Taliban’s role:
After the killing of Zawahiri, questions are being raised whether the Taliban were giving shelter to the terrorist leader after the capture of Kabul in August 2021. Before this, the US military has been deployed in Afghanistan for the last 20 years. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, in a statement, confirmed and strongly condemned the attack, calling it a violation of “international principles”.
A spokesman for Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry also said that a loud bang was heard in Kabul on Sunday morning. Spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor said, “A house in Sherpur was hit by a rocket. Since the house was vacant, no one was injured.
