At a recent in-camera meeting of central counter-terrorism central members of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), a senior official made it clear that fighting al-Qaeda and other radical groups would be a priority. On the other hand, the agency’s funds and resources will be diverted to deal with China.
The CIA’s views on tackling terrorism have not changed even after the drone strike killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. The agency’s deputy director David Cohen told the meeting that the US would continue to deal with terrorists, although its priority would be to understand and counter China’s strategy.
President Joe Biden and top national security officials are focusing less on counter-terrorism and more on tackling the political, economic and military threats posed by Sino-Russia, even as Afghanistan ends a year of military action.
Appointments to deal with China:
Many officers in intelligence agencies are being appointed to various positions to deal with China, while some of these officers were earlier working to deal with terrorism. Events following al-Zawahiri’s death suggest that the US will have to deal with both at the same time, as China has threatened to cut all ties with the US in protest against US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

The US has long been concerned about China’s growing political and economic ambitions. Intelligence officials said they needed to keep a close eye on China after not stating the reason for the origin of Covid-19. At the same time, after the war in Ukraine, it has become necessary to keep an eye on Russia.
