0 Saudi Arabia: Former Twitter worker convicted of Saudi espionage, leaked data from government critics

Former Twitter employee Ahmad Abouammo in the US has been found guilty of acting as a spy for Saudi Arabia and leaking personal data of users who denounced the Saudi government. He has been the Media Partnership Manager for the Middle East region at Twitter.

Ahmed is accused of acting as a spy for Saudi Arabia without registering with the US government three years ago. Prosecutors argued that a key member of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s government tapped Abuammo to help investigate his enemies. After hearing the case, a jury found Ahmed guilty on six counts, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and serious charges of money laundering. However, Ahmed was also acquitted of five other charges related to wire fraud. According to the complaint, data on more than 6,000 Twitter accounts was accessed.

Ahmed Almutari, alias Ahmed Aljabreen, a Saudi national along with Abu Ammo and Ali Aljabarah, was accused in 2019 of acting as an illegal agent of the Saudi government in the US. Abuammo was also accused of destroying, altering or falsifying records in the federal investigation. In a San Francisco court, Abuammo has now been convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He could face up to 20 years in prison.
