New York has declared a public health emergency amid rising cases of monkeypox infection. Cases of monkeypox infection are being reported in the world as well as in Europe. Its effect is being seen the most in New York.
New York Mayor Eric Adams and Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan said that more than 1.50 lakh citizens are at risk of infection here. New York has recorded 1,345 cases as of Friday, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. California was second with 799.
On July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global health emergency. The disease has been around for decades in parts of Central and West Africa, but it was not as widespread outside. So far, four monkeypox infected patients have been reported in India. The condition of all of them is said to be stable.
More than 22000 cases of monkeypox in 80 countries:
According to the WHO, since May this year, more than 22,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in 80 countries. About 75 of these suspected deaths occurred in Nigeria and Congo in Africa. Brazil, Spain also reported deaths linked to monkeypox.
