India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series against West Indies. They won the second match played in Trinidad on Sunday (24 July) by two wickets. Earlier on Friday, in the first ODI, Team India won by three runs.
Batting first, West Indies scored 311 for six in 50 overs. In reply, Team India scored 312 runs for eight wickets in 49.4 overs. The hero of India’s victory was all-rounder Axar Patel. Apart from taking one wicket in bowling, he scored an unbeaten 64 runs in batting.
Akshar batted brilliantly in the last 10 overs. In the last over, the team had to score eight runs to win. Nicholas Pooran calls Kyle Meyers to bowl. For Meyers, this match has been great so far. Apart from scoring 39 runs in 23 balls in batting, he took a brilliant catch of Shikhar Dhawan. Sanju Samson was run out on the best throw and took two wickets in the bowling. Pooran expected a miracle from him in the last over, but it did not happen. Axar Patel made the match for India by hitting a six off the fourth ball.
India won the 12th series:
India won the 12th consecutive series against West Indies. The last time he lost was in 2006. Windies then won the five-match series 4-1. There have been 12 series since then, but West Indies did not get success against India.
Shai Hope made two half-century partnerships:
West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Kyle Meyers and Shai Hope gave the team a strong start. Both shared a partnership of 65 runs. The team got its first blow in the form of Meyers. He was caught by Deepak Hooda on his own ball. Meyers scored 39 runs off 23 balls. He hit six fours and a six. Axar Patel gave the second blow to West Indies in the 22nd over. He got Shamrah Brooks caught by captain Shikhar Dhawan. Brooks scored 35 runs off 36 balls. He shared a 62-run partnership with Hope for the second wicket.
Brandon King’s bat did not play in this match:
Brandon King’s bat, who scored a half-century in the last match, did not work in this match. He could not even open the account. Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed King in the fifth ball of the 23rd over. Captain Dhawan once again took a brilliant catch.
Nicholas Pooran played the captaincy innings:
West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran played the captaincy innings in the match. He scored 74 runs off 77 balls. Pooran shared a massive 117-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Shai Hope. Powell was caught on the boundary to Shreyas Iyer in an attempt to hit a six. He scored 13 runs in an innings of 10 balls. Romario Shepherd remained unbeaten on 15 and Akil Hossain scored six runs.
Shai Hope achieved a special achievement:
Shai Hope made his 100th ODI memorable. He completed his century by hitting a six off Yuzvendra Chahal. This is the 13th century of his career. Hope scored his third century against India in ODIs. Hope has become the 10th batsman in the world to score a century in the 100th ODI. Hope was caught by Shardul in the 49th over at the hands of Axar Patel.
Hope is the fourth West Indies batsman to score a century in the 100th ODI. After 16 years no player has done this for the Windies. The last time Ramnaresh Sarwan had achieved this feat was in 2006. Before Sarwan, explosive batsman Chris Gayle scored a century in the 100th ODI in 2004 and Gordon Greenidge in 1988. Greenidge was the first batsman in the world to do so.
Dhawan’s bat did not play in this match:
Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill tried to give the team a strong start in this match. Both shared a 48-run partnership for the first wicket. Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan, who scored 97 runs in the previous match, failed in the second ODI. He was dismissed for 13 runs off 31 balls. He was dismissed while trying to hit a short ball from Romario Shepherd over the third man boundary. Kyle Meyers took a brilliant catch while diving to the boundary.
After Gill, Suryakumar returns to the pavilion:
Shortly after Dhawan’s dismissal, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav also returned to the pavilion. India got the second blow in the 16th over. Kyle Meyers sent Gill to the pavilion on the fourth ball. Gill made a mistake while trying to hit a big shot in front and the ball went straight into Meyers’s hands. He scored 43 runs off 49 balls. He hit five fours in his innings. Suryakumar Yadav’s bat did not work. He is once again hitting the ball into his wickets. Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed after scoring nine runs in eight balls. He hit a six. Kyle Meyers bowled him.
Iyer added 99 runs with Samson:
Shreyas Iyer scored a half-century in the second consecutive match. This is his seventh fifty in eight ODIs against West Indies. He was dismissed for 63 runs off 71 balls. Alzarri Joseph dismissed him on the last ball of the 33rd over. Iyer shared 99 runs for the fourth wicket with Sanju Samson.
Samson scored the first half-century of his ODI career:
Sanju Samson scored the first ODI half-century of his ODI career. He returned to the pavilion after scoring 54 off 51 balls. He hit three fours and three sixes. Sanju was run out in the 39th over. He wanted to take a run off the ball of Romario Shepherd. The ball hit the bat and went to fielder Kyle Meyers. Meyers threw at the bowler’s end and the ball hit Shepherd’s leg and hit the wickets. Samson was far behind. He got out.
Hooda, Shardul and Avesh played useful innings:
Deepak Hooda was dismissed for 33 runs off 36 balls. He could not finish the match, but definitely took the team closer to victory. He shared a 51-run partnership with Axar. Shardul Thakur may have scored just three runs off six balls, but he added 24 runs from 12 balls with Axar for the seventh wicket. After his dismissal, Avesh Khan came to the crease. In the debut match, he hit two fours under heavy pressure. Scored 10 runs off 12 balls. With Axar, 24 runs in 19 balls for the eighth wicket.
