Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on Friday during an election event. He was shot dead by a former soldier. According to doctors, he died due to excessive bleeding. Dr. Hidetada Fukushima, chief of emergency services at Nara Medical University Hospital, said Shinzo Abe was hit in the neck by two bullets and it damaged his heart and a major artery, causing blood loss to his body.
According to the Wall Street Journal report, Dr. Fukushima said that Abe suffered a heart attack at the scene and was close to death. The doctor declared him brought dead at 5:03 pm (local time). Dr. Fukushima said doctors had attempted a blood transfusion after being unable to stop the bleeding.
Man shot during speech:
Shinzo Abe was rushed to hospital after being shot during an election campaign speech in western Japan, but with no signs of life. On Friday, 67-year-old Abe was delivering a speech in the western Japanese city of Nara ahead of elections to Japan’s upper house of parliament. Meanwhile, at 11.30 am, a former soldier shot him. Security personnel immediately overpowered him, but by then Abe had become the victim of a fatal bullet. The killer has been identified as 41-year-old Tetsuya Yamagami, a resident of Nara City. This man had carried out the attack with a hand made gun. It looked like a camera.
Left the post of PM in 2020 due to health reasons:
Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, stepped down in 2020 citing health reasons. He was the Prime Minister of Japan twice, from 2006-07 and again in 2012-20. He was followed by Yoshihide Suga and then Fumio Kishida as PM. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said earlier in his live address to the country, this can never be forgiven. The authorities will take appropriate measures to handle the situation.
Kishida said the motive behind the shooting of Abe was not known.
PM Modi and Rajnath expressed grief:
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over Abe’s death and said in a tweet, “I am shocked and saddened beyond words by the sad demise of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a great global statesman, an outstanding leader and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to making Japan and the world a better place.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed grief over Abe’s death. He was deeply saddened by the passing of Lika- former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe. His role in strengthening the strategic ties between India and Japan was commendable. He has left a lasting legacy in the Indo-Pacific. My condolences to his family and the people of Japan.
