0 Amarnath Yatra 2022: Amarnath Yatra postponed after cloudburst, Helpline number released

About 40 tents, including three langars, were washed away by the flood caused by cloudburst near the Amarnath cave. 15 Amarnath pilgrims died while 40 more people are said to be missing. Many injured are being airlifted.

The Amarnath Yatra has been stopped by the Jammu and Kashmir administration for the time being. Meanwhile, the army has started a major rescue operation. Helpline numbers have been issued to inform the passengers and their families.

Four to six people stay in a tent:

All agencies related to disaster management including NDRF, SDRF are engaged in relief work. It is being told that at around 5.30 pm, the cloud burst at a distance of about two kilometers from the Amarnath cave. The water came into the drain in front of the cave. A tent city has been built for the travelers right in front of the holy cave where four to six people stay in a tent.

About five thousand passengers present:

Officials said that after the cloudburst, water entered the drain in front of the Amarnath cave with a strong current. Around five thousand passengers were present during that time. The flood water carried away three anchors and around 40 tents in the tent city built on the flat ground in front of the cave. There was a stampede among the passengers. Disaster management teams started evacuating the passengers to safer places.

All agencies engaged in rescue operation:

To escape the flood, the travelers left their tents and climbed the slopes of the mountain. According to the Kashmir Zone Police, all the agencies are involved in the rescue operation. The injured are being airlifted. According to NDRF Director General Atul Karwal, ten people have died. Three people have been evacuated safely. A team of NDRF was stationed near the holy cave, which is involved in the rescue. The second team has also reached the spot while the third team has also been sent.
