0 Satellite System: America is developing satellite system to track Hypersonic Weapons

The US is pushing to develop a satellite system to track hypersonic weapons. The US will spend US$1.3 billion to develop advanced satellites that will be able to better track hypersonic missile threats. The Pentagon on Monday announced two new contracts that will put detection and tracking systems in orbit by 2025.

Derek Tournea, director of the Space Development Agency, said the contract would give the country 28 satellites, as the US moves to expand and enhance its capacity to counter growing threats from Russia and China.

America cautious about Russia and China:

Russia and China are making progress in their program of hypersonic missiles, which are more difficult to track and shoot down because they are more maneuverable in flight than conventional weapons. US officials said what China tested last year was a hypersonic missile, and that Russia has used hypersonic weapons in attacks during the war in Ukraine.

Tournier told Pentagon reporters on Monday that Russia and China are developing and testing these advanced missiles, which are extremely maneuverable. These satellites are specially designed for the next generation version of Hazards so that we can detect and track these hypersonic maneuvering vehicles and their point of impact.

Additional funding for the program has been approved by the US Parliament. The plan is specifically designed to respond to China’s increasing interference in the Indo-Pacific region and China’s rapidly progressing military development.

Hypersonic weapons are defined as anything traveling beyond Mach 5 or more than five times the speed of sound. It is about 3,800 mph (6,100 kph). Although intercontinental ballistic missiles exceed that range, they travel in a predictable path, which makes it possible to intercept them.
