The names of the last two candidates in the race for the new Prime Minister of Britain have been decided. Indian-origin Rishi Sunak and Foreign Minister Liz Truss have made it to the final round. Taking the lead from the start, Rishi Sunak was also at the forefront in the fifth and final round. In Wednesday’s fifth round of voting, Sunak got a total of 137 votes, while Liz Truss secured 113 votes. Penny Mordent dropped out of the race with 105 votes.
118 votes were received in the fourth round of voting:
Former Indian-origin Chancellor Rishi Sunak received 118 votes in the fourth round of voting by his party colleagues, the 120 needed to cement his place as one of the last contenders in the race to replace Boris Johnson. The vote was a little less than a third of the Conservative Party MPs. Trade Minister Penny Mordant got 92 votes and Foreign Minister Liz Truss got 86 votes.
Among the last two candidates, Sunak’s name was being considered fixed, while the fight for the second place between Trade Minister Mordant and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss was an interesting one. However, Mordant was eliminated in the fifth round.
At the same time, a Tory MP told The Daily Telegraph newspaper that the vote was being rigged. It can’t be that Truss won 15 votes more than Tom Tugendhat. Votes are being manipulated. The MP said Rishi went up with only three votes. It doesn’t make any sense. They want Rishi vs. Liz. Former minister Kemi Bednokh was out of the race with 59 votes.
Sunak leads in opinion polls:
