0 IND vs WI 1st ODI Highlights: India won by 3 runs, Shikhar Dhawan and Siraj the heroes of the win

The three ODI series between India and West Indies started on 22 July (Friday) in Trinidad. Team India took a 1-0 lead in the series after winning the first ODI by three runs. West Indies had to score 15 runs in the last over, but Siraj gave away just 11 runs.

Batting first, India scored 308 for seven in 50 overs. West Indies could only manage 305 runs in 50 overs for six wickets. Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan played an innings of 97 runs. At the same time, Mohammad Siraj bowled brilliantly under pressure. He took two wickets for 58 runs in 10 overs. Dhawan was adjudged the player of the match for the captaincy innings.

India’s fourth consecutive win in West Indies. They last lost on July 2, 2017 at North Sound. Since then, Team India has won three consecutive matches in Kingston and one in Port of Spain. In a match played in Guyana, the result did not come out. The second match of the series between the two teams will now be played at the same ground on Sunday (July 24).

Shepherd could not hit a six off the last ball:

In the last over, Romario Shepherd made 39 not out off 25 balls and Akil Hossain scored 33 not out off 32 balls. Both made the match exciting by sharing an unbeaten 53 runs off 33 balls for the seventh wicket. Shepherd needed a six off the last ball to win, but he could not do it. Had Shepherd hit a boundary, the match would have gone into a super over.

Dhawan and Gill made a century partnership:

Talking about the Indian innings, Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill gave the team a great start. The duo shared a partnership of 73 runs in the first 10 overs. After this both of them scored half-centuries and took their partnership to 119 runs. Team India got the first blow on this score.

On the third ball of the 18th over, Gill was run out by Nicholas Pooran on a brilliant throw. Gill got out due to his mistake. He asked Dhawan for a run, but himself was running slow. He had to bear the brunt of this. Gill scored 64 runs in his 53-ball innings with the help of four fours and two sixes.

Dhawan could not score a century in ODIs after three years:

After Gill was dismissed, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer came to the crease. He played captain Dhawan very well. Both of them tired the Windies bowlers fiercely. Iyer and Dhawan shared a 94-run partnership for the second wicket off 97 balls. Dhawan was dismissed after scoring 97 runs. He had a chance to score a century in ODIs after three years. He had scored the last century against Australia in 2019. Dhawan could not take advantage of this opportunity and was caught by Brooks in an attempt to hit a boundary off Moti’s ball towards point. He hit 10 fours and three sixes in his innings.

Iyer hits half century:

Shreyas Iyer completed his half-century after the dismissal of Shikhar Dhawan. However, he could not play long innings. Iyer returned to the pavilion after scoring 54 runs. He wanted to hit Moti over the extra-cover boundary, but Windies captain Nicholas Pooran jumped and took a brilliant one-handed catch. Iyer hit five fours and two sixes in his 57-ball innings. After his dismissal, Sanju Samson came to the crease.

Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson fail:

Shortly after Shreyas Iyer’s dismissal, Suryakumar Yadav also returned to the pavilion. Known for his quick run, Suryakumar could only manage 13 runs in 14 balls in this match. He hit two fours. Akil Hossain clean bowled him in the 39th over. Sanju Samson went lbw in the 43rd over. Romaria Shepherd’s ball was on the leg-stump and Sanju wanted to play it on the leg-side, but the ball did not hit the bat. After the ball hit the pad, Romario made a strong appeal and the umpire gave Samson out. Samson scored 12 runs off 18 balls with the help of a six.

Deepak Hooda also did not walk:

After the fall of five wickets, Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel tried to handle the team’s innings. Both shared 42 runs in 37 balls. During this, Hooda’s bat remained silent. Akshar scored 21 runs off 21 balls. Deepak Hooda scored 27 runs off 32 balls. Both were dismissed by Alzarri Joseph in the same over.

Shardul Thakur remained unbeaten on seven and Mohammad Siraj scored one run. The Indian team had scored 225 runs in 35 overs at one time. It seemed that the team would reach close to 350 runs, but due to continuous fall of wickets, only 83 runs were scored in the last 15 overs.

Brooks and Meyers took over the West Indies:

Mohammad Siraj gave the first blow to West Indies. He dismissed the experienced Shai Hope in the fifth ball of the fifth over. Hope was caught by Shardul Thakur in an attempt to hit a boundary towards third man. He scored just seven runs off 18 balls. During this, a four came off his bat. After this, Shamrah Brooks and Kyle Meyers took over the team. The two put on a century partnership for the second wicket.

Shardul gave a double blow:

Shardul Thakur got the wicket India were looking for. He dismissed Shamrah Brooks off a short ball. Brooks was caught by Shreyas Iyer on the deep square leg boundary in an attempt to hit a six. He shared a 117-run partnership with Kyle Meyers for the second wicket. Brooks scored 46 off 61 balls. After him, Shardul also dismissed Meyers. Meyers had scored 75 runs off 68 balls. On the fifth ball of the 26th over, he caught wicketkeeper Sanju Samson. Meyers hit 10 fours and a six in his innings.

Pooran and Powell fail:

Mohammad Siraj gave the fourth blow to West Indies. He sent the opposition captain Nicholas Pooran to the pavilion on the very first ball of the 36th over. Pooran takes a catch to the famous Krishna at mid-on. He scored 25 runs off 26 balls. During this he hit two sixes. Pooran shared a partnership of 51 runs off 56 balls with Brandon King. Rovman Powell, famous for hitting long sixes, did not play in this match. Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed him in the 37th over. On Chahal’s delivery, Powell caught Deepak Hooda at slips.
