The inauguration of the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham took place on Thursday (July 28) in a colorful manner. Athletes from 72 countries participated in the event. India was represented by star badminton player PV Sindhu and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh. Both were flag bearers of India.
Birmingham is hosting these games for the first time. England is hosting these games for the third time. Before Birmingham, the Commonwealth Games were held in London in 1934 and in Manchester in 2002.
India has entered these games for the 18th time. He did not participate in 1930, 1950, 1962 and 1986. This time India is expecting gold medals from several athletes including badminton star PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, wrestler Ravi Dahiya, Bajrang Punia, boxer Lovleen Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to the Indian players. He tweeted, “Congratulations to the Indian contingent on the start of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. I am sure our athletes will give their best and continue to inspire the people of India with their stellar performances.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli has congratulated the Indian players participating in the Commonwealth Games. “My best wishes to the Indian women’s cricket team and all our athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games,” she tweeted.
Birmingham’s history showcased:
The program started with African Drums. The car industry is famous in Birmingham. An exhibition of 72 new and used cars made here was shown. Prince Charles arrived by Aston Martin car. Singer Samantha Oxbrough performed the national anthem of England. Stella & Group showcases the history of Birmingham. During this, the character of famous comedian Charlie Chaplin was also shown.
Birmingham’s culture was showcased through a large bull ring. The Bull Ring was seen in Birmingham with awe. He had a double dealing with women. Gradually people from different parts of the world settled in Birmingham. This city does not belong to any one culture. Around 1500 artists took part in the cultural program.
Malala Yousafzai also arrived:
Children’s rights activist Pakistan Malala Yousafzai also attended the opening ceremony. He gave a speech there. He said that all the children of the world have the right to fulfill his dream. Malala raised her voice for the education of girls.
