Chinese scientists have created a fish that eats microplastics. It is capable of eating pieces of plastic much smaller than a grain of rice. It is designed for cleaning the sea. This black colored robotic fish works with the help of a light (treated with radioactive rays). Through this she can flap her wings and move her body.
A team of Chinese scientists from Sichuan University in southwest China said that these robotic fish will one day clean up microplastic waste from the oceans around the world. It is delicate to the touch and up to 1.3 cm (0.5 in) long. Some such fish are working to remove microplastics from the water in the depths of the surface. The team says they are still working on robotic fish so that they can one day go deeper and eat microplastics from the water.
low weight, small size:
Researcher Wang Yuyan of the team that built the robot said, “We have created a small robotic fish with low weight. It can be used for biomedical or hazardous operations. Apart from this, it is a kind of small robot, which can also be installed in the body. Which can also help in eliminating the disease. Scientists can control the robots using lights so that they don’t collide with other fish and ships floating in the water.
Even after the big fish is eaten, it remains alive:
According to Wang, even if they are accidentally eaten by other fish in the water, it will not harm the real fish. She will easily digest these robots. That’s because the fish are made from polyurethane. Which is bio compatible. Robotic fish can absorb pollutants and repair themselves if damaged. It can swim with a body length of 2.76 per second, which is faster than most artificial robots.
Negative impact of microplastics on the environment:
Wang says that we are working on collecting most of the microplastics. It has a negative impact on the environment. It limits growth, reproduction and normal biological functions in organisms and also affects humans.
