Rajiv Kumar will be the next Chief Election Commissioner of the country. The Ministry of Justice and Law gave this information by issuing a notification on Thursday.
It said that the President has appointed Rajiv Kumar, the senior-most commissioner of the Election Commission, to the post. He will take over as CEC on May 15. It is noteworthy that the tenure of the current CEC Sushil Chandra is ending on May 14.
Who is Rajiv Kumar?
Rajiv Kumar was born on February 19, 1960. He is a 1984 batch IAS officer. He worked in the administrative services for 36 years. Apart from several central ministries, he also served for a long time in his Bihar-Jharkhand cadre.
Rajeev Kumar has done LLB in Advocacy, PGDM and MA in Public Policy with B.Sc. Apart from this, he has also worked in Social, Eco-Forest, Human Resources, Finance and Banking Sectors. He retired from the post of Union Finance Secretary in February 2020.
2024 general elections will be held under the leadership of Rajiv Kumar:
Rajiv Kumar was appointed as a commissioner in the Election Commission on September 1, 2020. As per the rules, the tenure of the Election Commissioner is six years or till he attains the age of 65 years (whichever is earlier).
Since, Kumar was born on February, 1960, his tenure is till 2025. That is, from the next assembly elections to the 2024 general elections, to be held under the supervision of Rajiv Kumar.
