0 PM Modi Nepal Visit: Is Modi’s visit a sign of diminishing influence of China?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Lumbini in neighboring Nepal on a one-day visit on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. The Prime Minister offered prayers at the Mayadevi temple in Lumbani here, circumambulated the sacred Pushkarni tank and the Ashoka Pillar. He also participated in the Bhoomi-Poojan of the Buddhist Cultural Center being built with the help of India.

During his visit, he will also hold bilateral talks with Nepalese PM Deuba. PM also has a lunch program with Deuba. During this, there will be seven important agreements between the two countries. This visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is considered very important from the diplomatic point of view. Let’s understand why?

5th visit to Nepal-

This is Modi’s fifth visit to Nepal after becoming Prime Minister in 2014. At the same time, Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has visited India twice. He had visited India in 2017 and most recently in 2022.

First know what will happen on this visit of PM?

During this visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss issues like hydropower, development and connectivity with his Nepalese counterpart Deuba. After the bilateral meeting, there will be some agreements on the issues of cooperation in the field of cultural and education between the two countries.

The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of the India International Center for Buddhist Culture and Heritage at Lumbani Math during this period. Apart from this, Prime Minister Modi will also participate in the Buddha Jayanti celebrations. He will also address Buddhist scholars, Buddhist monks as well as people of Nepal and India.

Why is this visit of PM Modi important?

Mainly two political parties dominate in Nepal. First Communist Party and second Nepali Congress. At present there is a government of Nepali Congress Party. Sher Bahadur Deuba became the Prime Minister on 13 July 2021. Prior to this, KP Sharma Oli of the Communist Party of Nepal was the Prime Minister from 2018 to 2021. India-Nepal relations had soured during the tenure of KP Sharma.

Foreign Affairs expert Prof. Pradeep Somvanshi says, ‘Sharma was of communist ideology and he was under the influence of China. In those days, the intervention of the Ambassador of China was directly from the Prime Minister to the President’s Office of Nepal. Due to this many disputes started between India and Nepal. There was tension in both the countries.

Pro. According to Somvanshi, ‘India will be affected by the increasing closeness between Nepal and China. By exerting more influence on Nepal, China can use its land against India. This would be the most dangerous situation. In such a situation, India will have to keep its relations with Nepal right, while Nepal also needs to be careful with China.

Defense expert Dr. Mahesh Karandikar also believes the same. He says, “Ever since Deuba became the Prime Minister, India-Nepal relations have seen an improvement. It’s a good thing. Nepal should learn from the situation in Sri Lanka. If Nepal becomes dependent on China in any way, then its condition will become very bad in the coming time. Good relations between India and Nepal are necessary for both.

Good sign, China’s influence is decreasing in neighboring countries:

Foreign affairs expert Aditya Patel says, ‘Sri Lanka is doomed under the debt of China. The economic and social condition has suffered a great deal. People are forced to sleep hungry. Inflation is at its peak. Even at such a time, China neither waived its debt nor gave any rebate on interest, but Sri Lanka got the support of India.

In this difficult situation, India has not only helped Sri Lanka financially but is also providing food, oil and other necessary resources. Due to this, while the relations between the two countries are getting stronger, the distance between Sri Lanka and China is increasing.

Aditya said, ‘Not only Sri Lanka and Nepal, in the last few years China had tried to spoil India’s relations in Bhutan, Myanmar, Maldives also. However, India handled all these in time. During Corona, India gave a lot of help to Bhutan. Similarly, the political situation in Myanmar was bad.

The army had captured the power there. After this the whole world stopped sending aid to Myanmar. India condemned this action of Myanmar Army, but definitely continued to help the people there.

In Maldives too, China along with the main opposition party started an anti-India movement. However, the ruling party did not give much importance to this movement. Due to this, the relations between the two countries are still very good.
