Left-handed batsman Nicholas Pooran has been named the new ODI and T20 captain of the West Indies. Pooran will replace Kieron Pollard, who retired last month.
Cricket West Indies announced this on Tuesday (May 3). Pooran was earlier the vice-captain of the team under Pollard. Wicket-keeper batsman Shai Hope has been made the new vice-captain of the team in ODIs.
Cricket West Indies said, “Nicolas Pooran will take over the captaincy of the West Indies men’s ODI and T20 teams after Kieron Pollard retires from international cricket.”
Pooran will also lead the team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be held later this year and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup to be held in October 2023.
Jimmy Adams, Director of Cricket West Indies, was quoted as saying, “We believe Nicholls is ready to lead white-ball teams with his experience and performance.
The selection committee believes that Nicholls has matured as a player.” He has captained both the teams in Pollard’s absence and the selection committee is happy with his performance.
“I am honored to be appointed as the captain of the West Indies team. I am following in the footsteps of legends who have created an amazing legacy for West Indies cricket. It is indeed a wonderful legacy.” It’s an iconic role. Being the captain is the biggest moment of my career so far.”
