London Olympics bronze medalist Saina Nehwal has won her first match at the Badminton Asia Championships. On the other hand, Lakshya Sen and B Sai Praneeth have lost in the men’s section.
Saina, who was trying to make a comeback after recovering from injuries, defeated Sim Yujin of South Korea 21-15, 17-21, 21-13. On the other hand, World Championships bronze medalist Lakshya Sen fell victim to an upset against unseeded Li Shi Feng of China.
Fifth seed Lakshya suffered a 21-12, 10-21, 19-21 defeat in the opening round of the men’s singles match that lasted 56 minutes. World No. 19 Praneeth lost 17-21, 13-21 to Indonesia’s Jonathan Christie in straight games.
The journey of young Akarshi Kashyap also came to an end. She lost 15-21, 9-21 to top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in women’s singles.
The pair of Ashwini Bhat and Shigga Gautam along with Simran Singhi and Ritika Thakar also crashed out in the opening round after losing straight games.
Bhat and Gautam lost 19-21, 12-21 to the Malaysian pair of Anna Ching Yik Cheong and Teo Mei Jing. On the other hand, Singhi and Thakar were defeated by Malaysia’s seventh seeded pair of Pearl Tan and Muralitharan Thinah 21-15, 21-11. PV Sindhu, Malvika Bansod and Kidambi Srikanth will also play in their respective singles matches in the tournament.
