Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu defeated Singapore’s Yui Yan Jeslin Hui in straight games to reach the women’s singles quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Championships here on Thursday. Fourth seed Sindhu defeated world number 100 Jasleen Hui 21-16 21-16 in 42 minutes.
However, London Olympics bronze medalist Saina Nehwal and World Championships silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth bowed out of the tournament with defeats.
On the other hand, third seed Indian men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made it to the last eight with a victory in the second round.
The third seeded Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag beat the Japanese pair of Akira Koga and Taichi Saito 21-17 21-15 in straight games.
Jeslin gave a tough fight to Sindhu:
Earlier, despite the huge difference in the rankings, Sindhu was given a tough fight by Jesselyn Hui. Sindhu was at one point 7-9 in the first game but made the score 10-11 by the break.
Sindhu, however, made a comeback to level the score at 16-16 and then went on to win the first game. In the second game, Sindhu took a 12-8 lead but the Singaporean came back to make the score 15-16. Sindhu won the match by showing a strong game.
Sindhu defeated Bing in Tokyo Olympics-
In the next round, world number 7 Sindhu will take on third seed Bing Xiao of China, whom Sindhu had won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Against Bing Xiao, Sindhu has won 7 matches, but has lost 9. The Indian player, however, has registered victories in both the previous matches.
Saina-Srikanth’s dream of winning a medal is shattered:
Saina Nehwal’s dreams of winning a fourth medal in the prestigious continental tournament were shattered when she lost 21-12 7-21 13-21 to world number 16 Weng Zhi Yi, 22, of China.
Saina, who was making a comeback from an injury, did not take part in trials for the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Uber Cup.
Meanwhile, seventh seed Srikanth also suffered a three-game loss in the men’s singles second round in a tough contest. He went down 16-21 21-17 17-21 to Weng Hong Yang of China in the men’s singles second round match that lasted an hour and 17 minutes.
