Akarshi Kashyap and Priyanshu Rajawat emerged winners in the Badminton Association of India (BAI) selection trials in women’s and men’s singles on Wednesday to ensure their selection for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Akarshi beat Ashmita Chaliha 21-10 17-21 21-15 in the national trials at the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex here, while Priyanshu beat Odisha Open winner Kiran George 21-15 18-21 21-10 to rise in the rankings. took the top spot.
Akarshi, who was unbeaten in the tournament, will be the second women’s singles player along with two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu in the Commonwealth Games squad while Priyanshu will get a chance to represent the country at the Asian Games and Thomas Cup.
In the mixed doubles event, B Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated Ishan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto 11-21, 22-20, 21-18 to claim the top spot. The pair are likely to be selected in the squad for all three major tournaments. Ishaan and Tanisha finished second while Prateek Ranade and Akshaya Warnag secured the third position and N Sikki Reddy and K Sai Prateek secured the fourth position.
