Deepak Poonia failed to beat Kazakhstan’s Ajmat Daulatbekov’s strong defense and had to settle for a silver medal on the final day of the Asian Wrestling Championships.
At the same time, Vicky Chahar won the bronze medal in the freestyle 92 kg category. He defeated Ajiniyaz Saparniazov of Uzbekistan 5-3.
Deepak (86kg, freestyle), who was challenging for the first gold medal in the continental event, had made it to the final without losing any points. He first defeated Iran’s Mohsen Miryousuf Mostafi Alanzag (6-0) and then Korea’s Guwanuk Kim (5-0).
This is Deepak’s fourth medal at the Asian Championships. He has earlier won one silver (2021) and two bronze (2019 and 2020) medals.
India won 17 medals in this continental competition. Ravi Dahiya was the only gold medalist who won the gold in men’s freestyle 57kg category. It was encouraging for Greco-Roman wrestlers to win five medals.
Mangal Kadyan lost 4-6 to Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov of Kyrgyzstan in the bronze medal bout in the 61kg category. Yash Tunir, however, lost by a close 10-11 margin to Ikhtior of Uzbekistan in the qualification round match of the 74kg category. Anirudh Kumar lost 4-8 to Jung of Korea in the quarter-finals of the 125kg category.
