Congressman Ro Khanna, an influential Indian-American Congressman, said Biden would not delay in exempting India from special CTSA sanctions considered very important, as he himself would get political mileage from it. He said that the bill has the support of 300 members of Congress.
Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. After this, there was talk of him allegedly influencing the 2016 US presidential election. After this the US implemented Katsa. Under this, the US administration imposes punitive sanctions on countries buying defense equipment from Russia. These sanctions were also applied against India for buying S-400 missile defense systems from Russia.
In July, the US House of Representatives passed a resolution moved by Ro Khanna to exempt India from these sanctions. It was said in this resolution that the S-400 will help India to counter the aggression of countries like China. Ro Khanna said, India-US relations were never so important in view of the expansionist policies of China and Russia. I am sure that the 21st century will define Indo-US relations. We should send a clear message to India that how much America values its relationship with India.
Two obstacles in the way of exemption for India:
The proposal for exemption to India is yet to be passed by the Senate. After that it will go to the President for signature. Democrat Ro Khanna, 45, said the threat of imposition of sanctions prevents our ties with India from getting stronger. It is also hindering the strengthening of the Quad involving Australia and Japan.
