Heavy rains in South Korea’s Seoul and metropolitan area have inundated roads in Gangnam district, drowning several vehicles and affecting public transport systems. At least nine people lost their lives in rain-related incidents, while six others are still missing.
Most rain since the summer of 1942:
Seoul’s western port city of Incheon and Gyeonggi province recorded more than 100 mm of rain on Monday night, Yonhap news agency reported. In Seoul’s Dongjak district, a single place recorded 141.5 mm of rain per hour, the highest since the summer of 1942, the report said.
391 people displaced:
The Korea Meteorological Department said up to 300 mm of rain is expected in the metropolitan area by Wednesday. 391 people from 230 households in the capital region have been displaced and have taken shelter in public convenience centres.
After the emergency service personnel launched an overnight clean-up drive, the roads were somewhat accessible to the public on Tuesday morning. Most subway services in the Seoul metropolitan area were operating normally, although some 80 roads and several riverside parking lots remained closed for security reasons.
88 people rescued from flood:
Eight passenger ferry routes have been closed for the time being. 88 people have been rescued from the floods. The Home Ministry has increased the monitoring level of flood damage from ‘alert’ to ‘severe’.
South Korean President Eun Suk Yol has urged public and private companies to change their timings so that more people do not travel at the same time. He has directed the officials to restore the stalled services at the earliest and to evacuate the people from dangerous places immediately.
800 buildings damaged:
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Security, about 800 buildings were damaged in Seoul and surrounding cities, while more than 400 people had to evacuate their homes. Three people called for help after water flooded a ‘basement home’ in southern Seoul’s Gwanak district on Monday night, but rescuers could not reach them.
