0 NMCG Meeting: Government approves 13 projects on geo-mapping and wetland conservation, costing 818 crores

The government has approved 13 projects related to land-mapping, sewerage management and wetland conservation at an estimated cost of about Rs.818 crore. The Ministry of Jal Shakti said in a statement that the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) on Wednesday organized the 44th meeting of the Executive Committee under the chairmanship of Director General, NMCG, G Ashok Kumar.

The meeting included 13 projects related to land mapping in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and National Capital Region of Delhi, sewerage management in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, riverfront development work in Uttarakhand, wetland conservation, Arth Ganga and renovation of gates, Belia circular canal approved in Kolkata. The estimated cost of these projects is around Rs.818 crore.

Three projects were approved for scientific land mapping of river Ganga and its tributaries. These include ‘Fluvial Geomorphology Mapping of Hindon River Basin’ by NEER. The Hindon River is the second level tributary of the Ganges.

The mapping of point sources of pollution as well as fluvial geomorphological changes brought about by anthropogenic activity or natural factors will aid in tributary rejuvenation and bring a deeper approach to maintaining the health of main river systems.

The main objectives of this project are delineation of geomorphological features of river along Hindon river basin, identification of decadal changes in river geomorphology, delineation of stream network and suitable recharge area, pollutant input close to confluence of river Hindon. point sources. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 16.4 lakh.

A similar proposal for Dehradun – ‘Geo-Ganga: Space-based Mapping and Monitoring of River Ganga’ using UAV/survey and remote sensing techniques costing Rs 5.4 crore scheme has also been approved. The project will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun.
