India on Friday expressed concern at the UN Human Rights Council over increasing efforts to remove women from public life in Afghanistan. India called for ensuring protection of the rights of women and girls during this period and said that efforts are being made to weaken the long fought battle of the last two decades.
India’s Ambassador to Geneva Puneet Agarwal said that India and Afghanistan have been working as partners for a long time. In such a situation, it is our responsibility to ensure the return of peace and stability there. Ambassador Puneet made these remarks during a discussion on the human rights status of women and girls in Afghanistan at the 50th session of the Human Rights Council.
India put forth its stand on the status of women:
Ambassador Puneet Aggarwal said that we are deeply concerned about the recent developments in Afghanistan, which directly affect the well being of women and girls of Afghanistan. Efforts are on to remove women from public life in Afghanistan.
Aggarwal said that there is a need to take steps to ensure protection of the rights of women and girls, including the right to education, and to strengthen the long fought battle for them in the last two decades.
Atrocities on women increased after Taliban rule came:
The Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan after capturing the capital Kabul in mid-August 2021, swiftly ending nearly 20 years of the US-led coalition’s presence in the war-torn country. Since taking power, the radical Islamist group is issuing new laws that mandate women to leave their homes only in cases of necessity and then cover their faces in public. Not only this, the Taliban also ordered a ban on the education of women.
